Chapter 22

I text Aiden on my way back to my bedroom, telling him to pick me up at the end of the road, before quickly changing into a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a pair of sneakers and sticking on Ty’s hoodie. He gave it to me before we left the warehouse on Christmas Day, since I was only wearing a thin dress and it was freezing outside. I should probably give it back to him, but it smells like him and it’s so comfy to wear. Nah, I think I’ll keep it.

Aiden’s is already there when I round the corner at the bottom of the drive, and I’m surprised to see it’s just him in the car.

“What’s up?” He asks as I climb in and fasten my seatbelt.

“We need to get to the warehouse,” I state without further explanation. He just continues to look at me, not moving a muscle to put the car in gear and do as I said.

Turning to look at him, I give him my best, ‘what-the-fuck’ look, hoping to kick start him into action. “Why?” He finally asks, but I have a sneaking suspicion he already knows why. I sigh heavily, frustrated with him already, and I’ve only been around him for a few minutes.

“You know why. I talked to Oliver.”

“And what did Oliver have to tell you?” His voice doesn’t give anything away. I can’t tell if he’s angry that I spoke to Oliver. I throw my hands up in exasperation. Is he for real right now?

“Don’t play games with me, Aiden. You know what Oliver had to say. You know he took my father to the same place you went to for the auction, and that the other one-percenter families were there. You know they are all in on this little illegal business venture, so don’t play dumb with me.”

“Alright,” he says slowly. “Why do you need to go to the warehouse then?”

“I need to know more about the other one-percenter families. I think they are all using their influence and connections to ensure no one looks too closely at what they are doing.”

Aiden looks at me for a long time before sighing, leaning back in his chair and looking out the window. He doesn’t say anything for several moments, and I give him the time to think through his own thoughts, waiting impatiently for him to share with me whatever he knows. What I’ve just suggested didn’t surprise him, so he must have already been thinking along the same lines as me.

“You’re right,” he finally says, still not looking at me. “All of them are involved. Between them, they work for or know people in every major arm of the legal system, as well as owning private companies they can use to smuggle people into the country and successfully hide them here.”

“How do you know that? We need to talk to Preston and Barrett, they know the families here better than we do.”

He just shakes his head, finally turning his gaze from the tree line to look at me.
